Sawdust Spawn
Sawdust spawn consists of mycelium grown into hardwood sawdust and is the preferred spawn of many commercial growers. Log inoculation can be mechanized with specialized tools. Drill holes using a 12mm drill bit with stop. Make the job quicker and easier and drill your holes with an angle grinder by pairing this bit with our aluminum Angle Grinder Adapter or Deluxe (steel) Angle Grinder. Inject spawn into the holes using our Palm-Style Inoculator, Thumb-Style Inoculator, or the sleek Okuda Inoculation Stick. If you're looking for more speed and efficiency, you may be interested in the Okuda Hand Inoculator, which injects spawn and caps each hole with each pull of the trigger. Sawdust spawn's faster spawn run makes it more economical to use than plug spawn. Because sawdust spawn is sensitive to drying out and must be kept moist throughout the inoculation process, each inoculation site should be immediately sealed with wax (we use melted cheese wax) or foam caps.
Sawdust spawn is used for Shiitake, Oyster, Wine Cap, Nameko, Almond Agaricus, Blewit, Maitake, Lion's Mane, Comb Tooth, Olive Oysterling, and Chicken of the Woods mushroom cultivation.
One 5.5 lb. bag of sawdust spawn will inoculate approx. twenty-five 4" by 40" logs.
