Almond flavor is unusual in a mushroom but the scent of this easy-to-grow Agaricus enhances its flavor, making it a delicious, easily identifiable single season crop for even the most neophyte mycophagist. Although related to the more familiar white button Agaricus and Portabella mushrooms, the "Almond" emits an unmistakable almond aroma; its buff color, parchment colored veil under each cap and pink to chocolate colored spores also make it easy to identify. It grows outdoors on garden compost and is perfectly suited to culturing with garden vegetables that benefit from a thick mulching of compost. Simply seed spawn with a 3-4" topdressing of compost in the spring. Because it is such a warm weather loving crop, gardeners in the North that use plastic tunnels or greenhouses will enjoy an additional late season of Almonds. Harvest whenever a blast of warm weather really heats things up in the fall. It doesn’t tolerate temperatures under 35° F, so plan your planting date for as soon as the danger of frost is truly over. NOTE: This spawn should not be refrigerated. Almond Agaricus spawn is only available for shipping within the US.
