Thimble Spawn

Thimble spawn is sawdust spawn formed into individual thimbles fit with a self sealing styrofoam cap. Thimbles have the advantage of a fast spawn run compared to plugs, such as with sawdust spawn, but does not require special inoculation tools (except a 13mm drill bit is a must) or wax. However, care must be taken to sprinkle the logs with water during the first season after inoculation during dry weather as the thimbles are slightly prone to drying. While thimble spawn is tricky to get used to, it is a time saver and results are excellent with proper care. Especially useful where time and labor costs come at a high price.

Thimble spawn is used with natural logs for Shiitake and Oyster mushroom cultivation only.

Each sheet includes 600 thimbles; enough to inoculate about 12 logs with a 4-6" diameter and 40" length.  Please note that thimble spawn is made to order, and takes approximately 2-3 weeks before this spawn is available to ship once ordered.

If you have ordered thimble spawn from us in the past, please also note that due to a change in our production equipment, the drill bit now required for thimble spawn inoculation is a 13mm drill bit with stop (not 12mm).
