Oyster mushroom cultivation is practiced around the world as an economical means of producing tons of mushrooms quickly from a variety of agricultural byproducts. They can also be grown on prepared "beds" for an easy backyard gardening project. Compost substrates include sawdust and straw, but a wide variety of materials can be used thanks to the aggressive colonization habit of this species.
