White Button, Crimini and Portabella Mushrooms

Scientific Name: Agaricus species

These mushrooms are well known to many of us and they have their culinary place along side the best mushrooms, cultivated and wild.

Cultivation: Methods have become so streamlined and adapted to large equipment that it is difficult to get the same “square foot production” that commercial cultivators get. Hence, in terms of price alone, we are better off getting these mushrooms from commercial growers or outlets. However, in terms of quality... now that’s a different story! Growing them from a ready-to-fruit kit yields the freshest mushrooms, plus it is fun to watch them develop!

For look alike mushrooms that can be grown in the garden and with similar culinary characteristics, we recommend Almond Agaricus, cousin to the buttons, and very similar in taste and appearance. For a larger mushroom like the Portabella, consider growing Wine Cap.
