Sawdust Spawn

Sawdust spawn consists of mycelium grown into hardwood sawdust and is the preferred spawn of many commercial growers. Log inoculation can be mechanized with specialized tools. Drill holes using a 7/16˝ drill bit with 7/16˝ stop collar, or make the job quicker and easier by using our 12mm drill bit with stop coupled with our angle grinder adapter. A faster spawn run makes sawdust spawn more economical to use than plug spawn. It is sensitive to drying and throughout the inoculation process must be kept moist. Each inoculation site should be immediately sealed with a wax coating (we use cheese wax).

Sawdust spawn is used for Shiitake, Oyster, Wine Cap, Nameko, Morel, Almond Agaricus, Blewit, Lion’s Mane, and Box Elder mushroom cultivation.

One 5.5 lb. bag of sawdust spawn will inoculate approx. twenty-five 4˝ by 40˝ logs.
